A ceremony marked the start of construction of the new icebreaker “Ilya Muromets” in St. Petersburg.

The diesel-and electric-powered icebreaker of project 21180 will be the first ship of this kind to support the activities of the Russian Northern Fleet in the Arctic in decades. It will be capable of making a two-month autonomous voyage to a distance of up to 12,000 nautical miles, sailing through 80 cm thick ice. The icebreaker is planned to be ready by 2017.
