The mystery of Champ Island

The mystery of Champ Island

Distant and mysterious, the Arctic has many secrets. On one of the Islands of the Franz Joseph Land one can fins unusual stones, which confuse scientists and attract many tourists.

Spherulites – round stone balls, which are scattered on the island Champ of the Franz Joseph Land. Although the Island was discovered by an American expedition in the early 20th century, for the first time scientists have shown the interest for unusual balls only in 2001.

The mystery of the stones is in their perfectly round shape and sizes that range fr om a few centimeters to several meters in diameter. But the most important question that has troubled scientists is the origin of unusual stone spheres. Today, scholars have not agreed about the appearance of spherulites, there are still many theories about their origin. According to one version, the spherulites are volcanic bombs formed after the gas explosion, their perfect shape can be explained by the constant washing of the waves. Famous Russian polar Explorer Victor Boyarsky o believes that the stones from the Champ Island are of organic origin and were formed on the seabed from the remains of shells.

Some people adhere to the non-scientific explanation and believe that balls are the result of the lost civilization or aliens activity. People who have ever visited the island can’t help thinking about the origin of the unusual stones and build their own theories.

Not less surprising is the fact that in the polar latitudes spherulites were found only on the Champ Island, you cannot find anything like that on any other island of the Franz Joseph Land – and there are 192 of them. The Arctic is not the only place on the planet wh ere scientists have discovered such balls. Stone spheres were also found in South America and Northern Europe, but their origin is still not clear.
